Woooooo I'm a donk!

Christine's here for the weekend so I'm not scheduled to play any poker. Well, she's passed out on my bed right now, so being the degenerate that I can still be, I decided to play some Omaha 8/b. Quickly donked off somewhere around $100. Again, being the complete degenerate that I am, I switched to PLO8 and quickly made 200$.

Nice to book a donkey win for $115. Oh, I also stole $20 from iRockHoes at $1000 NL. Risk $200 for $20 = SUPER DONKEY.

Hopefully recapping this here will stop me from degeneracy.

Lesson for the night: appreciate luck and stop depending on it!

August will be a good month!

Guess what! I'm going to update this two days in a row. I'm only doing this because I'm watching the women's beach volleyball finals at the same time, otherwise I would have waited until tomorrow to update this during business hours

I've been on such a confidence high since running deep into those tournaments on Friday. Since then I actually haven't played any more tournaments, but instead I've taken my momentum into the cash games. Before my significant cashes on Friday, my bankroll was so depleted that I had no choice but to multitable 9 tables of $25 NL. I decided recently (with the rejuvenated bankroll) to go up to $50 NL. To clarify, I am playing 9 tables, each with $50 buy in (25c and 50c blinds), amounting to a minimum of $450 spread across 9 tables.

In only 2 days I've decided that I can crush these games, and since I left myself around $3,000 online to use (I withdrew close to $3,000 a few days ago), I've decided I have just enough to take a shot at $100 NL. It was a semi-tough decision to quickly transition to $100 NL, but I want to see if I can makes these limits profitable as well. It's been close to 1.5 years since I multitabled $100 NL (back in the days when I had a larger bankroll and less expenses - rent, utilities, etc).

So tonight, I took my ~$3,000 spread across 3 sites and picked 9 tables to play. My session started off terrible, dropping somewhere around $350 in less than 10 minutes, but I quickly adjusted and played my A- game for the remainder of the session, ending the 3.5 hour session down only about $100. Looking back at my first session at $100 NL, I'm very satisfied with how I played. I had a few hands run into bigger hands, otherwise I believe I would've easily booked a small win tonight (ex. AK running into 44, flop was A43 and I was outplayed on the flop and turn when a K came on the board leading to me losing a $475 pot, and nut flush, AKhh vs tens full on a QQTxx board)

Overall, I was very content with my play and I am confident results will show the remainder of this month (whenever I find some freaking time to play!)

Here is a graph of my current results in cash games for the month, keeping in mind that my sessions are only 2-4 hours long, depending on if I even get a chance to play in a given day (only played 9 days out of 20 this month so far):

That's all for now folks!

Summer 2008 update

It appears that I wasn't able to keep my promise to myself to continue to update this blog frequently, but I suppose trying once again today can't hurt. Between the last entry and today, so much of my life has changed (for the better for those of you who don't know) and it continues to amaze me how quickly my life can spiral in one direction or another. Fortunately, this time around, 95% of my life is in my own hands and I'm finally feeling the benefits of an improved mental strength.

So what's relevant? What would be interesting to write about? I'm not particularly interested in divulging my own personal love life in this blog as it seems like those who are in my life on a daily basis would already know the endless drama that occurred during the first half of this year. In turn, this summer has been about as "drama-free" as can be and life has ultimately been relaxing (though I find ways to stress myself when I can).

I re-read my last entry before deciding to write this one, so it seems fit to start this update on how poker has been in the last few months.

To start off, I vaguely remember how unsuccessful of a poker player I was during the first 4-5 months of this year. According to PokerTracker, which for those of you who don't know is software that is commonly used by online poker degenerates like myself to keep track of stats, I made an impressive -$291 over 14,000 plus hands. The negative is correct. To add to that, I'm more than certain that I may have lost another $1,000 or so from poker hands that never made it to my database. As it's obvious, I didn't dedicate much time, or effort, to making money from poker during the spring semester. Though, to be fair, I do clearly remember cashing big in one tournament in late April that netted me close to $2,400. But I'm sure most of you (perhaps?) vaguely remember that night? Maybe not.

Anyway, this summer, after the hectic academic semester, including the rough emotional semester that I endured with ending one relationship and starting another, I finally was able to dedicate more time to improving my poker skills. For those of you who don't know. I've lived in Jersey for the summer, holding my internship here at Hess. In a nutshell, I am working in their refinery, making a decent amount of money that I have been using to pay off some credit card debt and bankrolling myself in poker.

June started off quite slow for me. The job was going well, but I was clearly frustrated with how my poker was going. Entering the summer, I was eager to transition my poker game from cash games into tournaments, knowing that there would be significantly more variance in my results. In case that didn't make sense to you, basically, it's difficult to consistently win in tournaments, especially low buy-in tournaments that I have been playing (ranging anywhere from $1 to $26). I don't have any concrete numbers for my results in June, but I can tell you I definitely was in the red (red = negative, green = positive)

The month of July continued to be a struggle for me as my tournaments results were sub par. I can give you concrete numbers there, as I have become more meticulous in recording my results. In a nutshell, in tournaments I netted a loss of $1,230, mostly from $10 - $26 entry fees, though I do recall a handful of $55 - $109 entry fees (which clearly I didn't not cash in). To add on to my own misery, I tracked that I lost another $148.60 in over 4,000 hands played for no limit texas holdem. I'm pretty sure I donked off several hundred more from hands that never were saved as well. Go me :)

As a side note, I also got distracted and played a shitload of pot limit omaha (mostly in June I believe) and clearly I didn't know what the fuck I was doing. I lost a little over $128 across almost 16,000 hands (yikes!). But whatever, I've long since past my desire to take on PLO while nurturing my already suffering holdem skills.

Do not fret, because the story gets significantly better. In August, I have been playing very good poker. In fact, it started from reverting back to cash games, where I know can be a winning player (disregard June and July) when I dedicate my time and effort to improving my game. In August, though I have only played cash games for 7 days, I've managed to make a few hundred. I haven't exactly tried to make my daily routine include poker, but when I do play, I actually concentrate and discard any distractions (TV etc.)

My best result actually game on August 15th, where I decided to take a day off and play some tournaments. Obviously, this wasn't a decision I made out on a limb, considering my results earlier this summer were more hideous than my last relationship breakup (haha plenty of pun intended there). But I was feeling very good Friday and optimistic that regardless of my results, I would be able to play my A game. It turns out that of the 7 tournaments I played, I cashed in 4 of them, and final tabled 2 of them netting a profit of over $4,000 in about 9 hours of play. For those of your who may be interested in following my tournament results, feel free to check here:

And here is where some of my inspiration has come from. I used to play a lot of poker with this fellow (Steve) back 3-4 years ago. I've since devoted more time to hanging out with friends and studying, whereas he's devoted more time to improving at poker. Check out his results, they are pretty sick.

If you look far enough, in June he won a tournament on Full Tilt for close to 65K. Impressive, isn't it? I have this potential as long as I try to devote some time to improving my poker.

So all in all, the first half of August has been good (poker wise), since I've netted close to $4,300. More importantly, I've really taken strong control of my life all summer and have making good decisions regarding my daily routine. Now if I can just starting exercising more regularly ...

This entry is a little more scatter-minded that I wanted it to be, but that's because I took a half hour haitus when Carly called to talk. Bowser's doing well also, for those of your who are interested. He's still as spoiled and hyper as before, but that's ok, I love him the way he is :)

I need to sleep. Hopefully the next time I update this isn't next year ...
